Musings on Spirituality and ‘The Spiritual Path’
Contrary to popular belief, ‘the spiritual path’ is actually magnificently ordinary, and that’s its secret sauce.
When you walk through life awake, consciously aware, openly welcoming all forms of experience — from mundane to memorable, painful to pleasurable — every single moment becomes an invitation to deepen in presence; every single moment becomes an opportunity to understand, to see, life more clearly.
There’s no difference between what appears to be ‘spiritual’ and literally everything else.
It doesn’t matter if you’re mopping the kitchen floor in your sweats or you’re giving an important presentation you’ve been preparing for months or you’re living in an Ashram in India for the summer. Everywhere you go, there you are — that is to say that who you’re being, your level of presence with whatever it is that you’re doing, your level of presence with whatever is happening, is the sole factor determining how available, fluid, and receptive you are to the intelligence of each moment; each moment that is reflecting back to you everything you’re ready to see and understand if only your eyes, ears, and heart are open enough to accept what life is showing you about yourself.
Your spirituality gets to look however you want it to look.
We humans love to refer to that invisible book that no one we ever met wrote…you know, that one that tells us how we’re supposed to ‘adult’ or ‘be spiritual’ or any of the other should’s that society conditions us to believe as truth.
But the actual truth is, each and every one of us gets to decide our own rules and do what feels TRUE and MOST ALIGNED for US and this is the way to live a life that feels authentically your own, not a cookie-cutter path laid out by antiquated traditions or unquestioned religious or societal standards.
Spirituality is highly personal, it’s unique to each and every one of us.
You may look to others for encouragement, inspiration, and support, but discovering how to resource your own needs from within brings you in contact with your Inner Being, your God Self. No one can ever tell you how that’s done, as it will look different for each and every one of us. It’s a path you must walk on your own — never truly alone though, even when, at times, it may feel that way.
‘The Spiritual Path’ isn’t about transcending your humanity. It’s about surrendering so deeply into your humanness that you cannot deny the presence of God in All beings, things, and experiences.
It’s easy to become enraptured by the bliss of spiritual experiences and practices to the point of pushing away your very human emotions, the slips and falls, the way down lows and the in-betweens, but this is missing the point. It’s all part of it — the suffering, the confusion, the grief, the breakdowns, the breakthroughs, the joy and connection and euphoria, it’s all part of the glorious tapestry our lives weave with every breath we take.
Though you are not of this world, you are in it.
Ascend, but then return to earth.
You are Divine.
You are Human.
You are spirit incarnate.
You are Love and you’re everywhere.
Warmth,
Rachel 🌞
